Step by step

  1. Neck P90: run its braided lead to the back of the neck volume pot and solder the BRAID to the pot (ground). Then take the INNER CORE (hot) on to the right-hand lug of the neck volume pot.
  2. Bridge P90: run its braided lead to the back of the bridge volume pot and solder the BRAID to the pot (ground). Then take the INNER CORE (hot) on to the right-hand lug of the bridge volume pot.
  3. Neck volume LEFT lug → bend it down and solder it to the back of the pot (ground).
  4. Bridge volume LEFT lug → bend it down and solder it to the back of the pot (ground).
  5. Neck volume MIDDLE lug → neck lug of the 3-way toggle.
  6. Bridge volume MIDDLE lug → bridge lug of the 3-way toggle.
  7. Solder one leg of the .022µF capacitor to the neck volume MIDDLE lug (together with the wire to the switch).
  8. Solder the other capacitor leg to the neck tone MIDDLE lug.
  9. Neck tone LEFT lug → bend it down and solder it to the back of the pot (ground). The tone pot’s right lug is not used.
  10. Solder one leg of the other .022µF capacitor to the bridge volume MIDDLE lug (with the switch wire), and the other leg to the bridge tone MIDDLE lug.
  11. Bridge tone LEFT lug → bend it down and solder it to the back of the pot (ground). The right lug is not used.
  12. 3-way toggle OUTPUT (center) lug → TIP lug of the output jack.
  13. Output jack SLEEVE lug → ground.
  14. 3-way toggle frame ground lug → ground.
  15. Run one ground wire joining the backs of all four pots, the switch ground, the jack sleeve and the bridge/tailpiece ground wire.

Before you solder

  • Pots are shown from the back with the lugs pointing up. Turning a knob up moves the middle lug’s contact toward the right-hand lug.
  • Before soldering the switch, check it with a meter: in the neck position, the outer lug that connects to the center lug is the neck lug.
  • Jack: the tip lug is on the long springy arm that touches the tip of the plug; the sleeve lug is on the frame.
  • Dog ear and bat wing P90s wire exactly the same way as the soapbar shown.
  • Never let the braid touch the inner core: that shorts the pickup.
