Two humbuckers · 3-way toggle · 2 volumes, 2 tones
Wolfetone 4-conductor humbuckers, standard series wiring ("modern" tone wiring)
Step by step
- Neck pickup RED (hot) → right-hand lug of the neck volume pot.
- Neck pickup GREEN + WHITE → solder together, insulate with heat-shrink or tape. They connect to nothing else.
- Neck pickup BLACK (ground) → ground (back of the neck volume pot).
- Neck pickup BARE shield → ground, with the black wire.
- Bridge pickup RED (hot) → right-hand lug of the bridge volume pot.
- Bridge pickup GREEN + WHITE → solder together and insulate. They connect to nothing else.
- Bridge pickup BLACK (ground) → ground.
- Bridge pickup BARE shield → ground, with the black wire.
- Neck volume LEFT lug → bend it down and solder it to the back of the pot (ground).
- Bridge volume LEFT lug → bend it down and solder it to the back of the pot (ground).
- Neck volume MIDDLE lug → neck lug of the 3-way toggle.
- Bridge volume MIDDLE lug → bridge lug of the 3-way toggle.
- Neck volume RIGHT lug → neck tone LEFT lug. Solder one leg of the .022µF capacitor to the neck tone MIDDLE lug and the other leg to the back of the pot. The tone pot’s right lug is not used.
- Bridge volume RIGHT lug → bridge tone LEFT lug. Solder one leg of the .022µF capacitor to the bridge tone MIDDLE lug and the other leg to the back of the pot. The tone pot’s right lug is not used.
- 3-way toggle OUTPUT (center) lug → TIP lug of the output jack.
- Output jack SLEEVE lug → ground.
- 3-way toggle frame ground lug → ground.
- Run one ground wire joining the backs of all four pots, the switch ground, the jack sleeve and the bridge/tailpiece ground wire.
Before you solder
- Pots are shown from the back with the lugs pointing up. Turning a knob up moves the middle lug’s contact toward the right-hand lug.
- Before soldering the switch, check it with a meter: in the neck position, the outer lug that connects to the center lug is the neck lug.
- Jack: the tip lug is on the long springy arm that touches the tip of the plug; the sleeve lug is on the frame.
- For coil split, parallel or 50s wiring, see the other diagrams. Never join red to black: that shorts the pickup.
